Complete Barn Renovation

This board and batten clad barn was renovated to provide the clients with a heated and cooled finished interior space. Located in an historic district, the project was designed to maintain the exterior character of the original barn while updating the interior. The barn was lifted and the stone foundation repaired then lowered back onto the foundation. The space between the original post and beam framework was renovated to insulate the building and create a watertight envelope. Since the original post and beam framework was infilled on the interior side of the original exterior wall, a new post and beam framework was constructed on the inside of the original structure. Working closely with a timber frame contractor to locate hardwood for the new interior timber framing, a barn that had been dismantled in Massachusetts was located and purchased to provide the needed material. A completely new interior frame was constructed inside the original frame to create the finished spaces shown in the photographs below. A large portion of the interior vertical boards and hardwood flooring were reclaimed from the original barns interior material.
